Hello, I welcomed your comments on your concert and opera experiences in Russia. Do you happen to have any information (or know who might have it) on a person with the surname Beggrov who taught piano with Leschetizky at the St. Petersburg Conservatory when it was founded by Rubenstein in 1862? My wife, Marina Iurievna Beggrova is a member of that family which dates back to the time when Peter the Great was westernizing Russia. The family included naval engineers and artists (Karl Petrovich Beggrov, Alexander Karlovitch Beggrov, Olga Fedorovna Beggrova-Gartman) and, apparently, a Beggrov who taught piano for the conservatory. Any help would be appreciated. Philip Peter

Dear Cantor Marlena,
Reading your blog was very interesting because I had a friend that did a similar trip to the old Russia, Latvia and did a research on her family background; there is a book that was translated to English from her trip; it talk about the people of the region and specially the old Jewish cemetery there and the efforts to restore it. I’ll be in Bethlehem in early November and, if you are there, I can bring the book for you to see it. My friend has since past away.

I am very interested in the Choral Synagogues, particularly St Petersburg (because I don't know Moscow as well).

You saw and enjoyed a small choral performance on shabbat, and I know about the 2003 large orchestral performance. But why are they called Choral Synangogues? Was there a long history of musical performances in these two synagogues - for members only? for all Jews? for all Russians? Noone seems to know.

many thanks
